The official rules for the 2014 VGC season have been released by the Pokémon website. Pokémon Video Game Championship. Alongside these were also the Play! Pokémon rules and formats.
The standard battle format style will be Flat Double Battles using Pokémon X and Y. All Pokemon are scaled to level 50. Notably, the only Pokémon allowed are those in the Central, Coastal or Mountain Kalos Pokedexes with the exclusion of specific legendaries available in-game: Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres, Xerneas, Yveltal, Zygarde and Mewtwo.
A recent interview with art director Ken Sugimori shed some light on his thoughts of the current generation of Pokemon. According to Sugimori, while he is pleased with the games, he would like to see any future generations return to the “simplistic” nature of the first generation, specifically Pokemon Red and Green. Some examples he gave included changing the number of attacks, abilities, and items in the games, and even watering down the designs of some Pokemon as well.
What do you all think? Do you like the more complex direction the series has taken (multiple abilities, natures, shiny Pokemon, the competitive aspect with EVs and IVs, tons of items, etc.), or would you prefer the focus be as it was like in the first installments of the franchise?
